Fresh Starts

One in three teens has experienced violence in a dating relationship, and 60 percent of battered women say their first abusive relationship began in high school.

Dating violence is controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. It can include verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or a combination of these.

The Fresh Start Dating Violence Program was developed in 1991 in response to a need for prevention programs in the community. The program works to reduce domestic violence by reaching young people through educational programs on the dynamics of dating violence and healthy relationships. This program is offered free to schools, community and youth groups.

During the 2006-2007 school year, the Crisis Center Prevention Specialists educated over 4,700 students on the dangers of dating violence.

If you are interested in having a dating violence presentation at your school, in your community or for your youth group, contact the Crisis Center Prevention Specialist at 708/429-7255, ext. 14.

The Dating Bill of Rights

You have the right to a healthy dating relationship.

You also have the right to...

  Be treated with respect.
Say no and not feel guilty.
  Make mistakes.
Have your OWN feelings, opinions and convictions.
Change your mind or to decide on a different course of action.
  Ask for what you want.
Feel good about yourself and your decisions.
